Titan Wood, a wholly owned subsidiary of UK environmental science and technology company, Accsys Technologies PLC, specialises in the development of new wood technologies. The company is on track to begin commercial production of its branded acetylated wood, "Accoya", later this year. The acetylation technology has been developed by Ensis scientist Kourosh Nasheri and technician Gavin Durbin. This technology will initially be tested in Titan Wood's large scale pilot plant in the Netherlands over the coming months, with the aim of adopting it for use in their new full scale facility. Wood acetylation is a process which increases the amount of "acetyl" molecules in wood, thereby modifying its physical properties. The process protects wood from rot by making it inedible to most micro-organisms and insects without making it toxic to humans. It also greatly improves the wood's dimensional stability, reducing its tendency to swell and shrink and making it less prone to cracking. (From Friday Offcuts – 13 October 2006.) Read more here Australia / New Zealand: Timber treatment technology updates available In mid September a two-yearly technology update, Timber Preservation 2006, was run for timber treatment companies. Around 190 participated in the FIEA series. The programme provided an update on challenges and opportunities being faced by the industry along with an overview of emerging product and process technologies. Information supplied by US, Australian and New Zealand presenters will be essential for future planning by the Australasian wood preservation industry. (From Friday Offcuts – 06 October 2006.) (CSI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Rockwood Holdings, Inc., today announced their plans to form a joint venture company to provide an extensive range of advanced wood treatment technologies and services to the global wood treatment industry. The new company will bring together the wood biocides business of Rohm and Haas and the wood protection chemicals business of CSI. The joint venture will substantially strengthen the new company's product development programs, marketing, sales and comprehensive services to the wood treatment market. Read more here Scientific News Termite breakthrough in Australia The Australian Government Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPIF) research indicates that untreated wood at a termite infested site increases the need for higher concentrations of preventative chemicals in treated wood at the same site. (From Friday Offcuts – 27 October 2006.) Read more here New publications Environmental Impacts of Treated Wood Edited by Timothy G Townsend and Helena Solo-Gabriele, 2006, CRC Taylor & Francis Group, Boca Raton, London, New York. The book provides a timely compilation of perspectives necessary for making informed, conscientious decisions in the production, use and disposal of treated woods that will minimize the environmental impact and human exposure risks associated with treated wood products today. Concentrate or dilute contaminants? Strategies for Swedish wood waste is the title of a recent Swedish doctoral thesis (Joakim Krook, Linköping University, Dissertation No 1047, ISBN 91-85643-84-X). The thesis deals with management strategies for Swedish wood waste. There is a special focus on separation strategies and in what way such measures influence environmental aspects like the presence of heavy metals in the waste. Incentives and capacity to influence wood waste management are analysed, emphasising the importance of driving forces such as governmental regulation and market interactions.
