Australia: New technology enhances wood stability
Technology developed by Ensis scientists has been purchased by Titan Wood Limited, a United Kingdom-based company that leads the field in the commercial production of acetylated wood. Titan Wood, a wholly owned subsidiary of UK environmental science and technology company, Accsys Technologies PLC, specialises in the development of new wood technologies. The company is on track to begin commercial production of its branded acetylated wood, "Accoya", later this year.
The acetylation technology has been developed by Ensis scientist Kourosh Nasheri and technician Gavin Durbin. This technology will initially be tested in Titan Wood's large scale pilot plant in the Netherlands over the coming months, with the aim of adopting it for use in their new full scale facility. Wood acetylation is a process which increases the amount of "acetyl" molecules in wood, thereby modifying its physical properties. The process protects wood from rot by making it inedible to most micro-organisms and insects without making it toxic to humans. It also greatly improves the wood's dimensional stability, reducing its tendency to swell and shrink and making it less prone to cracking.

Australia / New Zealand: Timber treatment technology updates available
In mid September a two-yearly technology update, Timber Preservation 2006, was run for timber treatment companies. Around 190 participated in the FIEA series. The programme provided an update on challenges and opportunities being faced by the industry along with an overview of emerging product and process technologies. Information supplied by US, Australian and New Zealand presenters will be essential for future planning by the Australasian wood preservation industry.

New publications
Environmental Impacts of Treated Wood
Edited by Timothy G Townsend and Helena Solo-Gabriele, 2006, CRC Taylor & Francis Group, Boca Raton, London, New York.

The book provides a timely compilation of perspectives necessary for making informed, conscientious decisions in the production, use and disposal of treated woods that will minimize the environmental impact and human exposure risks associated with treated wood products today.

Concentrate or dilute contaminants? Strategies for Swedish wood waste
is the title of a recent Swedish doctoral thesis (Joakim Krook, Linköping University, Dissertation No 1047, ISBN 91-85643-84-X). The thesis deals with management strategies for Swedish wood waste. There is a special focus on separation strategies and in what way such measures influence environmental aspects like the presence of heavy metals in the waste. Incentives and capacity to influence wood waste management are analysed, emphasising the importance of driving forces such as governmental regulation and market interactions.

IRG 38 Call for papers !!!!!!
Special Session on "Coatings and aesthetics for wood surface protection" Section 3: Wood Protecting Chemicals.
Submission for oral and poster presentations at the 38-th IRG Symposium in Jackson Lake, Wyoming, USA, on May 20-24, 2007, are requested for the special session on surface wood protection, part of Section 3: Wood Protecting Chemicals. The suggested topics expected to be covered in the scientific papers submitted for this session should be as follow:
  • Studies on wood surface characterization, modifications and degradations due to various external factors such as UV and weathering, mineral and enzymatic stain, evaluate other potential discolorations of the original aspect or color of a wood surface.
  • Studies on interaction between wood surface and various wood preservative capable to protect and preserve the aesthetic of wood surface.
  • Coatings for wood surface protections
  • Nano-technology for coatings and surface treatments aimed to improve or preserve the aesthetic aspects of a wood surface
  • Chemical modifications of wood surfaces aimed in improving the aesthetics.
  • Effect of wood species on resistance to UV and weathering degradation of a wood surface.
  • Novel analytical tools to explore and evaluate the wood surface changes due to various external factors such as UV degradation, weathering, staining other then fungal in nature.
  • Industrial applications and technologies for wood surface treatment aimed to preserve the aesthetic of the wood.
