Europe: Wood for energy is a waste?
The European paper industry ( CEPI) has published an independent study showing that using wood as a resource for paper products first, and only using it as a source of energy at the end of the product life cycle adds four times more added value to the economy and retains six times more jobs than simply burning wood for energy.

IRG Secretariat News

IRG 38 at the Jackson Lake Lodge, US
The meeting at Jackson Lake Lodge, Wyoming, attracted nearly 170 delegates, inc of companions. The Local Organizing Committee with chairman Rich Ziobro had done an excellent job to organize a meeting with a friendly atmosphere in spectacular surroundings. For the first time in IRG history, as far as any member present could remember, it was snowing one day!
About 90 papers were presented in well-attended technical sessions. The main structure of the programme had been somewhat changed this year. Instead of five main session (one per Section), only one main session was held at the beginning of the Meeting with one presentation from each Section. A Scientific Plenary Session was held at the end of the Meeting. The first part of this session was "housekeeping" to report back from the activities in the various Working Parties and Sections as well as to plan for next year's meeting. The second part focused on two discussion topics concerning the future of copper-based wood preservatives and the future of wood protection research. The latter was introduced by Dr Preston, who showed a worrying trend for IRG - a decline in the number of papers and participants over the last years. The severe decline in public and industry funding, the latter mainly because of the consolidation of the wood preservative manufacturing industry, was thought to be the reason for this. Less people are involved in wood protection research than 10 years ago.
It was generally agreed that IRG should extend its focus to other aspects of wood protection like coatings, fire, design etc, and therefore should try to reach other groups as well (architects, designers, marketing people etc).
Developing better recognition of the IRG papers was also highlighted in the discussion. Some members thought that IRG papers should be peer reviewed but there was no consensus on this issue and no answer was given on the way to proceed for peer reviewing papers.
Members and other delegates attending the Meeting are welcome with views on the new structure of the technical part of the Meeting. Please e-mail the Secretariat at irg@sp.se.
From the meeting can also be reported:
  • The Plenary ratified a proposal from the Executive Council to award Prof Dr Jerzy Wazny and Dr Kunio Tsunoda with Honorary Life-Long Membership.
  • Dr Gérard Deroubaix, France, was unanimously elected to serve as President during the next three years
  • Mr Jack Norton, Australia, was unanimously elected as Vice-President for three years
  • New members on the Executive Council: Dr Joris Van Acker, Belgium, Dr Koichi Yamamoto, Japan, and Dr Lehong Jin, USA.
  • New Section 4 team: Dr Andreas Rapp, Germany, and Dr S Nami Kartal, Turkey
  • New Section 5 team: Dr Ed Baines, UK, and Dr Jenna Jambeck, USA
  • The membership and sponsorship fees remain unchanged for 2008
  • A slight increase of the conference fees will be introduced in 2008.
The Plenary report (IRG/WP 07-60241) is available. Just click on the link.
Finally it has to mentioned that the IRG 38 website will be open for some time still. On the website you can find pdf files of all presentations in Working Parties and the Scientific Main Session. Photos from the Meeting will also be available.

Procedures Manual updated
The IRG Procedures Manual is a "handbook" for IRG Members and Sponsors. In connection with this year's Annual Meeting, the Statutes (IRG/WP 07-60243) were slightly revised (= the Membership Committee suspended) and a new guideline for IRG support of regional meetings (IRG/WP 07-60244) approved.
The guidelines for IRG Travel Awards (IRG/WP 07-60242), Nomination procedure (IRG/WP 07-60245), and membership (IRG/WP 07-60246) were revised.
You can download the new/revised documents by clicking on the links.

Ideas for IRG 39 Annual Meeting in Turkey
During the Annual Meeting at Jackson Lake Lodge, a number of proposals for special sessions were raised:
  • Decay mechanisms
  • Natural extractives (common interest in Sections 1 and 3; focus should be on the mode of action of these, their ecotoxicity, and the interest in industry for this type of chemicals)
  • Wood Plastic Composites (WPC) and the resistance against all types of wood destroying insects
  • Nanomaterials and nanotechnology in wood protection
  • Wood protection in Eastern Europe
  • Conservation of wooden cultural heritage.
It was also suggested that
  • The characterisation of moisture in wood in service and its consequences could be a topic of common interest for Sections 2 and 5.
  • The special focuses of Section 2 for next year would be on performance classification, the initiative for a DNA sequencing priority list of organisms, and corrosion.
  • Aesthetics and Coatings could be introduced as a regular working party on coatings.
  • The working party on wood composites should be reactivated next year and papers on this topic are welcome.
A number of potentially interesting papers were also suggested:
  • The Benefits of Preserved Wood
  • -The Benefits of Preserved Wood in the Built Environment
  • Preserved Wood : Successful Sustainability
  • The Role of Preserved Wood in Green Building
  • Preserved Wood : Fast Facts for Sustainability
  • Preserved Wood in Cutting Edge Architecture
  • Aesthetic Uses of Preserved Wood
  • Preserved Wood : A Century of Service
  • Recent Developments in the Life Cycle Analysis of Preserved Wood
  • Promotion of Preserved Wood : A Global Perspective
  • The Role of Preserved Wood in Limiting Climate Change
  • A Comparative Assessment of the Carbon Footprint of Construction Materials
  • Research Needs in Wood Protection
  • Sustainable Use of Preserved Wood after Removal from Service
More ideas are welcome. Please contact the Scientific Programme Committee chairman, Mr Jack Norton, or any of the Section leaders: Dr Frederick Green III, Dr Michael Kennedy, Dr Marko Petrič, Dr Andreas Rapp, or Dr Ed Baines.
If you want to prepare your paper early, a templateis available now.

Problems with the Compendium login ID?
Some members have reported problems with the Compendium login.
The following procedure seems to work in most cases:
First you need to clear your Internet cache. If you are using Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. Find and select Clear temporary internet files.
In Mozilla Firefox, you choose Tools and then Clear sensitive data. Check Cache and Session data and hit clear.
NB. In order to get renewed login ID, the 2007 dues must be paid.
The web-based Compendium will be updated with the 2007 papers as soon as all late/corrected papers have been received. Hopefully this will happen by 1 September at the latest.
