Regulatory News EU: News on Creosote WEI attended on Wednesday 16 December the meeting of the Competent Authorities when they discussed the Competent Authorities Report on Creosote. KEMI presented its final Competent Authorities Report in which it defended the inclusion of Creosote on ANNEX I of the BPD. It identified a safe use in Use Class 3 (including railway sleepers). Regarding UC 4 it pointed out that there are some environmental concerns. It furthermore referred to the internet stakeholder consultation that pointed out to the severe socio-economic impacts of a possible ban of Creosote. Most of the EU Member States expressed their voting intentions and explained their reasoning. WEI’s feeling is that the most likely outcome will be a compromise between the different views, namely an inclusion of Creosote on Annex I but limited to 5 years only. The problem of limited applications is however not solved. If the compromise is adopted, only wood for UC 3 will be allowed and limited to one species, pine. Use of other wood species must be assessed prior to authorisation at Member State level. Source: WEI NEWS6-2009 - Issue 6/09 - December 2009, Brussels, BE. New Zealand: ERMA wants public input on methyl bromide review ERMA New Zealand is calling for public submissions on its reassessment of the fumigant methyl bromide. The application for reassessment was released for public submission and includes a preliminary recommendation for tighter controls on the use of the substance. A final decision will be made in mid-late 2010 once the application, public submissions and any other information relevant to the reassessment has been considered by the Environmental Risk Management Authority. Methyl bromide is an ozone-depleting gas used primarily for the quarantine and pre-shipment treatment of timber, logs and other produce, both for export and import, to kill a wide range of pests. New Zealand: Wood fuel classification guidelines The variability in the quality of wood fuels is perceived as a barrier to those that could potentially be users of wood fuels. The lack of any classification system for wood fuel in New Zealand creates concern over fuel quality and uncertainty in regards to the burning of wood at a regulatory level. It’s been proposed that quality issues are addressed through the publication of a set of classification guidelines for wood fuels. The Wood Fuel Classification Guidelines will be subject to ongoing development and feedback on these new guidelines is welcomed. Click here to download the new guidelines. From Friday Offcuts – 09 October 2009. Business News USA - NL: Koppers to acquire Cindu Chemicals B.V. ("Cindu") from joint owners Cindu B.V. and Corus Staal B.V. for an undisclosed purchase price.
