Methodologies for termiticide testing and standardization

IRG/WP 93-10043

Standardization of testing methodologies for termiticides has been one of the main topics of discussion for Working Group 1b in recent IRG meetings. While it is agreed that there is a need to provide a standardized testing procedure for industry and regulatory agencies, concerns remain that such a standardized procedure may become an obstacle for developing better testing methods or innovations in termite control. Because there are potentially many termiticides that can be used in different circumstances, intended goals for a termiticide have to be clearly stated. A testing procedure, therefore, should be designed so that the success or failure of the tested termiticide can be objectively demonstrated. The scientific quality or the validity of such testing methodology should be subjected to constant scrutiny by peers among research community.
