Membership is on a personal basis and not transferable.

There are five categories of members: regular, student, corresponding, life long and honorary.

Student membership is intended mainly for post-graduate students and is limited to a period of maximum 3 years, supported by the Head of Department.

Corresponding members are scientists whose participation in IRG is sponsored by the organisation for a limited time period. The purpose of the Corresponding Membership is to encourage participation by scientists from countries not represented at IRG, and whose institution is unable to provide adequate finding for regular membership. It is also designed to allow continuing membership for scientists from institutions who are temporarily unable to maintain their regular membership.
