Sapwood staining fungi

IRG/WP 125

A Käärik

The compilation is based on the available literature and on research results from the Royal College of Forestry, Stockholm but I am aware that there are great gaps in it and so it must be looked upon as a basis for collecting more information about these fungi. The review in the presented form needs an explanation. Preparing this review, the presented schedule was set up to facilitate summarisation of facts and also later application. During the work it became apparent that there existed detailed information only about some few fungi and very few facts about others. The published data do not always suit into my general schedule but nevertheless it might serve as a frame to show which kind of information is needed. As the temperature, moisture etc requirements and critical points are interdependent, probably some other form than the presented schedule must be found for a final presentation of the known facts. Thus, the presented paper will only give a general survey about how much approximately is known about the different sap stain fungi in literature and is at the same time a questionnaire for further information. It is hoped that members of the working group will comment and make additions to it using the same or similar formula. It would be of a great help to get any information (a) about the occurrence and importance of the different fungi in the different countries, (b) about further published investigations and (c) information concerning own research results. General statements circulating in text-books and manuals are of minor interest.
