According to the Regulations on Pesticide management of the People's Republic of China, wood preservatives belong to agrochemicals. The establishment of registration system on wood preservatives would be benefit to management of preservatives, including the market entrance and safety insurance to the human beings, livestock and the environment associated by the application of these preservatives. The wood preservatives are different from crop pesticides in the longevity requirement of the chemicals as well as the use pattern such as retention and penetration, so a series of technical criteria for lab and field trial methodology for registration purpose should be formulated independently. Development of reasonable technical criteria to evaluate the preservative for use category C4.1 by field stake test was conducted in this paper. The results showed that at least five years of field stake tests are necessary for evaluation of wood preservatives for use category C4.1 by Chinese masson pine and slash pine. In the fifth year of the test, the rational retention is recommended for C4.1 while decay rating index is above 9.5 and termite rating index is above 8.0.
