Waste management is getting important in the world. Most of wood based panel industries are interested in utilization of wood residues such as saw dust, sand dust and wood flour in other applications. The objective of this study is to investigate the usability of sand dust of MDF in wood plastic composites. HDPE and PP based composites with 30 % sand dusts loading were compounded in the single screw extruder. Extrudates were first collected and grinded into pellets and then were compression molded into rectangular panels. The thermal and mechanical properties such as flexural strength, flexural modulus, tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, and impact strength of wood plastic composites were determined. The flexural and tensile modules of the composites were increased while the other mechanical properties were decreased. All specimens provided flexural strength over the required standard. In the case of plastic type, PP based composites had better mechanical properties than HDPE based ones except impact strength values. This study showed that sand dust of MDF can be utilized as filler in HDPE and PP based wood plastic composites.
