A new factory applied preservative treatment for joinery

IRG/WP 02-40246

I M Robertson, W Beauford

Conventional pre-treatment processes involve the principle of applying preservatives to the external surfaces of wood to achieve the necessary penetration and retention of the chemicals although the heartwood remains difficult to treat. The present development involves the production of internal reservoirs within new joinery components, which are subsequently filled with a specially developed glycol borate preservatives. Preservative distribution is initiated from within the timber, is not dependent on moisture regimes and both sapwood and heartwood are treated. The application is unique and the treatment can be applied to most, if not all, species of wood and any size of window profile. The system also offers an in-situ rechargeable system for preservative replenishment, if required. Laboratory and field evaluations will be presented to demonstrate the service performance of the overall technique.
