The attached draft CEN Technical Specification (i.e. pre-EN standard) has been drafted in order to become an alternative to the Lap-Joint test method (EN 12037:23) for testing of wood in above ground situation and the draft CEN/TS Part 1 is specifically intended for determining the relative protective effectiveness of a wood preservative. The new draft CEN/TS is based on a test method developed by Preston and Zahora (2008), in the late 1990s, called the Sandwich test method, and their option “Modification A” has now been adapted for the European standardisation system. A first round robin with this method, exposed 20 cm above ground, was started in 2011 and with the experience of this RR, the method has now been modified by end-grain sealing of all test specimen members and exposure 40 cm above ground. A new Round Robin test according to the attached version, was started in 2023 in four fields – Taastrup (DK), Borås (SE), Limburgerhof (DE) and Kuching (MY). In this RR, Scots pine sapwood specimens for the Sandwich and Lap-Joint method, respectively, treated with CCA in three retention levels and a new proposed chromium- and arsenic-free reference preservative in three corresponding retention levels.
