Quantification of creosote and fluoride in remedially-treated poles

Three creosoted transmission poles were put into service in 1961 and they were subsequently remedially-treated with a proprietary fluoride remedial paste formulation in 1981. The poles were removed from service in 1996 and their ground-contact regions were analysed for creosote and fluoride contents. It was found that the poles were undecayed. Creosote retentions decreased down the profiles of the poles and ranged from 74.9 - 36.3 kg.m3. In contrast, fluoride retentions were of low values that fluoride was not present in toxic amounts. It was considered possible that fluoride may previously have been present in toxic amounts which had leached during service as it was 15 years since the pole was re treated. Thus indicating the necessity for consistent woodpole re treatment and inspection of transmission lines.
