Biotechnical faculty, Department of Wood Science and Technology is the centre for education and for research activities in the field of wood preservation. The most important researches are performed on: decay patterns of wood decay fungi, copper tolerant fungi, copper based preservatives, wood modification, conservation of wooden artefacts and improvement of performance of coated wood used in exterior. On these topics, Slovenian researches collaborate with several European and American institutions. Wood preservation is strictly regulated in Slovenia, special emphasis is given to the environmentally friendly solutions. Several classical preservatives such as CCA, Lindane, DDT, PCP, are banned for wood preservation for almost 20 years. However, the market of impregnated wood in Slovenia is relatively small but fast growing, as there was no tradition of using preserved wood for domestic application. There are vive bigger impregnation plants and three companies that produces wood preservatives.
