Potentiality of use extracts from Tetraclinis articulata like biocide against wood destroying organisms: Reticulitermes santonensis

Screening trials were conducted to determine the antitermitic and antifungal properties of essential oil and methanolic extractives obtained from Tetraclinis articulata heartwood. Extract-treated cellulose pads were used to evaluate antitermitic activity and complete termite mortality was obtained with the essential oil: the threshold is situated under 5% (v/v). Standardised tests according European standard EN 118 allow validate the use of essential oil like biocide.

Potential of antifungal and antitermitic activity of several essential oils

In the recent years, there has been an increasing concern regarding the safety of wood preservatives. Many research groups have examined the potential of essential oils as biocide based on their biological activity. This paper described the antitermitic and antifungal activity of twenty four essential oils from different plant species. The termicidal activity was carried out with a no-choice test with impregnated filter papers at several concentrations. Screening tests with mycelium of basidiomycete with different concentrations of essential oils were used to assess the fungicidal activity. The essential oils were less active against termites than fungi. Essential oil from savory was the most active and the threshold is under 1% while six essential oils were active against white and brown rot with a threshold under 0.1% (v/v). These results suggest essential oils may be active ingredients of interest for the development of wood preservatives.

Potential valorization of wood extractives from waste products of steam distillation of Aniba rosaeodora: antitermitic activity

Aniba rosaeodora, is a slow growing evergreens of the Lauraceae family which are indigenous over a wide range of the Greater Amazon Region (the Guianas and Venezuela, Brazilian Amazon…). The essential oil obtained from the wood has a characteristic aroma and is a long-established ingredient in the more expensive perfumes. The wood is also composed with alkaloid compounds like anibin. These compounds contribute to the protection of the wood against insects and fungi. This work is focused on the valorization of steam distillated sawdust; the sawdust was extracted with methanol in order to study the antitermitic activity of the extract. The methanolic extract shows an efficacy against termites at low concentrations according to the EN 117 standard.

Antitermitic activities of Shisham (Dalbergia sissoo Roxb.) heartwood extractives against two termite species

Shisham (Dalbergia sissoo) heartwood extractives were investigated for antitermitic activities against Heterotermes indicola and Reticulitermes flavipes. Heartwood extractives were removed from wood shavings by soxhlet extraction using (2:1) ethanol: toluene as the solvent system. Filter paper bioassays were conducted against both species to observe concentration dependent feeding response and mortality of termites. Results indicated that the highest termite mortality occurred at 10 mg/ml with a LC50 at 5.54 and 3.89 mg/ml against H. indicola and R. flavipes, respectively. Shisham extractives showed more repellency and antifeedant activity against H. indicola compared to R. flavipes. In choice and no-choice feeding bioassays with extracted and un-extracted Shisham wood blocks, increased wood loss due to termite feeding was observed on extracted blocks compared to un-extracted blocks. Higher termite mortality was also observed after feeding on un-extracted blocks compared to extracted blocks. Results also showed that extractives from Shisham imparted resistance to vacuum-pressure treated Southern pine (SYP, Pinus taeda L.) and Cottonwood (CW, Populus deltoides) against both species. These results suggest that Shisham extractives have antitermitic properties and may be potentially useful in the development of environment friendly termiticides.
