Giftwirkung einiger organischer Zinn-Verbindungen auf Eilarven von Hylotrupes bajulus (L.). [Toxic efficacy of some organic tin compounds against egg larvae of Hylotrupes bajulus (L.)]

The toxic values of 12 organic tin compounds towards newly hatched larvae of Hylotrupes bajulus were determined after 4- and 12-week test periods in comparison with bis-tri-n-butyltin oxide (TBTO). Tri-n-butyltin benzoate as well as the 2-, 3- and 4-methyl benzoate of tributyltin oxide were equally effective as TBTO and the latter two were somewhat more effective after a 12-week test period. Almost the same effects were obtained with N-cyclohexyl-diazenium-dioxy tri-n-butyltin. Less effective than TBTO by about the factor 2 were the compounds hexa-n-butylditin, tripropyltin(2-methyl benzoate) and N-cyclohexyl-diazenium-dioxy-tripropyltin, by about the factor 3 the compounds 3-acetyl-6-methyl-1.2-pyrane-4-on-2-tributyltin oxylate, the respective triphenyl compound and tri-n-butyltin dibrome propionate, by about the factor 10 another compound. Not only the chemical constitution but also the tin contents have to be considered in the evaluation of the results.

The Work reported here was undertaken at the request of CEN to see (1) whether the standard beaker leaching method under discussion at CEN, and based on the German DIN could be made less labour intensive; and (2) whether the leaching parameters could be expressed in more general terms so that alternative procedures could be used. A co-operative experiment was set up in which the amount of leaching of copper and chromium from treated pine sapwood blocks was studied using modifications of the German DIN procedure whilst keeping certain operational parameters constant.

Observations on preservative penetration in poplar

In the course of studies on the CCA treatment and durability of poplar timber a zone of refractory wood at the sapwood/heartwood boundary was observed. Further studies were conducted to investigate the causes of this refractory behaviour. The initial results have suggested that the presence of lipid storage products in the ray tissue may lead to impermeability, either by directly blocking pits or by preventing pit damage on drying. More work should be carried out before firm conclusions are drawn on the significance and causes of this effect.

Furfurylated wood – withdrawal load for fasteners

The withdrawal load for hot dip galvanized nails and chromated decking screws in furfurylated Baltic redwood (Pinus sylvestris) with a Weight Percent Gain (WPG) of approximately 40 % was measured according to DIN 1052. The average withdrawal loads were 60-100 % higher for the nails and approximately 20 % higher for the screws in the furfurylated wood compared to untreated wood. The results indicate that the withdrawal load is considerably higher for furfurylated wood (with approximately 40 % WPG) than for untreated wood. The main explanation for this is the higher density of furfurylated wood compared to untreated wood.
